What is Stephen Minister?
Stephen Ministers provide one-to-one care to people in our congregation and community who are experiencing difficulties in their lives.
A Stephen Minister is – A child of God who walks beside someone who is hurting
- A lay person who has (or is willing) to receive 50 hours of training in high-quality Christian care giving.
- A Caring Christian friend who listens, cares, prays, supports, and encourages.
- A person who hears God word in Galatians “Bear one another’s burdens and in this way fulfills the law of Christ. (Galatians 6:2)
“We live in a fast-paced and fragmented world. People suffer crises and tragedies, but they often don’t have caregivers they can count on. Family and friends may be scattered across the continent—or even the world. Neighborhoods rarely off the support they once did. So when a crisis or challenge hits, many people have no one to turn to and end up facing it all alone.
OVERWHELMING NEEDS: Congregations are overwhelmed with the needs for human care… People who are hospitalized, grieving, lonely, discouraged, divorced or separated, dying, unemployment, cancer or other illnesses, long term care, dealing with losses or needing to relocate, homebound, 1st time empty nesters, new parents, natural disasters, those in spiritual crisis..and the list goes on.
TOPICS: Some of the topics addressed in Stephen Ministry training include but not limited to… the person as caregiver, art of listening, process vs results, maintaining boundaries, confidentiality, telecare, ministering to those in grief, depression, the dying, relating to those experiencing loss, aging, and those needing long term care, ministry to new parents as well as to those with difficulty pregnancy, helping people get help they need, making your first visit, bringing Stephen ministry relationship to a close….
